The Rise Of The New Right… Nothing New…
By admin | June 17, 2010
This is my take on the MSNBC show “The Rise Of The New Right”.
Not shockingly Chris Mathews in his opening statement says that the Tea Party is angry and made sure to point out that this was not so much about politics but had real overtones of class warfare and racial resentment. He then moved right into glorified the bailouts and the health care bill and wondering why anyone could not be behind them.
He seemed to really fixate on the use of the Gadsden flag at Tea Parties, the ones that show a rattle snake and the words don’t tread on me. This is a flag that stands for a warning to all those that would oppress free people and was used in the Revolutionary war as a warning to the king of England. This also is the only tie that he has to move into the next part of the show, which is to link the Tea Party to militias and the “birther” movement, and the only thing he could come up with was the fact that people in those movements also use the Gadsden flag. That is a really weak attempt at a link, but I guess that passes for evidence to liberals.
The first part of his of the report was about militia groups, not about the Tea Party at all, although Mathews constantly used visual cues to try and link the two. When they interviewed the Michigan Militia members, they openly said that the Tea Party thought that they were too radical. In all fairness they then pointed out that law enforcement officials do not believe the Michigan Militia is an threat, but immediately afterwards Chris Mathews then insinuated that their were other more radial groups out there.
The report then went on to discuss the “Birther” movement. Once again the report was not about the Tea Party at all, but about trying to link the Tea Party to the small fringe groups that exist in any movement, even on the left.
After that they actually showed a real Tea Party activist, Ana Tweig, who was just a stay at home mom before she began her activism with the Tea Party movement. She was very clear about being a conservative, about putting together forums, townhalls, and rallies that support smaller government, and lower taxes. They showed that they spend hours each day putting together their organization.
I found that when she was talking about both the Democrats and the Republicans being wrong in what they have done in the area of fiscal responsibility, and that our real job is to get real conservative candidates put in office. She was very clear, very concise, and truly captured the meaning of the Tea Party and what we stand for.
After that, the report went on to try and attack Rand Paul, a Tea Party candidate in Kentucky. After that Mathews went on to try and link the Tea Party to the McCarthy type of anti-communist rhetoric, and the Christian right.
The show then goes on to try and show the “leaders” of the Tea Party, i.e. Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and some guy named Alex Jones. The Tea Party does not have a leader so really this was just an attempt at making a straw man to knock down, by then showing some of the stranger things they have said.
Other than the portrait on Ana Tweig, this was simply an attack piece on the Tea Party. At the end he made sure to try and say that it is the language of today’s right that is the really scary thing, and acts as if emotional language is new in politics. Yet, he seems to forget 8 years of hateful language thrown at President Bush.
It was what I though it would be nothing new, nothing shocking, just one insinuation after the next with no concrete examples of radical Tea Party members, because they don’t actually exist. We are not the boogieman; we are people that want smaller government, and fewer taxes, because when you have those things in place it promotes more freedom. Our founding fathers understood that smaller is better, which is why our constitution, which set up our original system of government, has only 4,543 words in it, while the new health care bill was written with about 400,000 words… I know which one I would trust more, does Chris Mathews?

Also, Matthews showed one incidence of violence that has never yet been proven to be tied to tea parties. Anyone could have thrown that brick. But yet he ignored the dozen or so hateful attacks on tea partiers by the left… making his piece quite incredible.
Remember, a man had his finger bitten, a man was shot, and most recently a man was punched in full view of the camera. And there are many other incidences of violence in between those. We had Major Hasan and Amy Bishop all in Obama’s camp. Then there is rapist Bill Ayers!
Violence does not count apparently when it comes from their side.
Hi NH,
Yes I did notice that he skimmed right over actual acts of violence, and simply hinted at the idea that the Tea Party could be violent, while ignoring violent assaults that Tea Party members have endured, many of which I have tried to document here. The most recent of which I discussed in my post “Protest The Government … Get Punched”.
This is a regular tactic taken by the left to ignore or downplay the acts that they have actually committed, and then talk as if their opponents where actually the ones that could do such things.
I have attended several Tea Party meetings and rallies. They are extremely peaceful. Kids running around, everyone waiving to cars going by, music, speeches. They instruct ahead of time. We do not condone any violence, racial, or vulgar signs or language. Tea Partiers are mostly seniors that are looking out for their grandchildren and want them to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities they enjoyed and see disappearing before their eyes. They are small business owners who want freedom from over taxation and regulations. They are soccer moms who want to drive their Suvs and live in their suburban homes instead of a condo. Mostly Tea Partiers want to preserve the Constitution, demand fiscal responsibility of government. They want corruption out of government, no more bailouts, payoffs. They want less government more freedom to the people. We really can’t understand anyone not wanting what we are demanding.
Hi Bonnie,
Thanks for your post. I absolutely agree with what you are saying, it is very hard to understand why some people would not agree with what we are trying to achieve. But all we can do is keep pushing forward with better ideas, and eventually they will see the light. Hopefully
